Located along the R Street Corridor in midtown Sacramento is the first ground-up entertainment venue for Another Planet Entertainment, with a capacity of 2,150 patrons, filling a need in the city for a larger club-style performance space. In concert with CAW Architects as the Prime Architect, Ellis Architects joined the design team, as the local architect, to assist with the design and coordination of the project through the City of Sacramento Planning Entitlements approval process, the development of the Construction Documents and Interior Design, and provide Construction Administration services. The new 40,517 square foot building replaces a vacant industrial warehouse building that was demolished to optimize efficiency and accessibility required. Designed as a building-within-a-building, the interior core, enveloped by concrete masonry construction to mitigate noise escaping to the neighborhood, is the performance hall with stage, main floor, and a tiered mezzanine. The 50-foot tall, windowless volume is surrounded by two-story steel construction for back-of-house and front-of-house uses, with windows that welcome natural light. The architectural expression pays homage to the industrial roots of R Street, blending board-formed concrete, rusted corrugated metal, and black gridded windows to create a bold, urban aesthetic that is both modern and contextual.
Channel 24 was awarded the ‘Best Entertainment Project’ by the Sacramento Business Journal’s Best Real Estate Project Awards of the Year. Additionally, the project received awards for ‘Excellence in New Construction’ from the Structural Engineers Association of Central California and National Council of Structural Engineers Associations.
